The main thing keeping me from giving this book 5 stars is that the scope of the book is relatively limited. Moreover the characters were interesting enough and compelling. The story was good and the plot was enjoyable. This was a well written and excellently performed audiobook. They're definitely not mine, so I hated it. If deeply flawed characters are your thing, you'll probably love this. This also clashes with his portrayed personality often. Too often contemplating running away and blinding him to what's before his eyes. The protagonist is also a massive, snivelling coward - something I also despise. Where the author can't decide between a 'cynical beyond his years street-wise street rat' and idiotic, naive child, and these moments stick out because they're few and far between, but they stand out and it definitely detracts. There are times where this breaks a little. Often a stupid or annoying protagonist is enough for me to drop and ding a story, but that's normally tied with poor writing or poorly though out plot choices. I feel like I have to take a step back and acknowledge that that's my bias towards young protagonists acting like annoying children at play. But I couldn't help despising the majority of my time with it. This story is competently written, very good even.
